What is a crown?
Dental crown model
Crowns are a tooth-shaped cap used for restoring individual teeth that have become unsightly or heavily damaged due to cavities or cracking. They can improve the integrity, appearance and alignment of an otherwise undesirable tooth. In a situation where the tooth is heavily damaged or broken down, it is the crown that becomes the ideal and lasting solution in which the tooth can be restored to its natural form.
Lab-made porcelain bridge and porcelain crown
Crowns can be made out of a wide range of materials. In most cases, it is made out of porcelain or monolithic zirconia, but in some other cases, it can be made purely from precious metal alloys (such as gold) or from porcelain fused to a metal base.
In order to make the crown, the dentist will reduce the size of your tooth and then take a detailed impression. This impression is then sent to a dental ceramist who custom designs your crown. In the majority of our cases, our dentists opt for the cosmetically superior monolithic zirconia: these are made by designing the crown via 3D CAD/CAM technology. The next step involves layering porcelain onto the zirconia base, which gives the crown its toothy appearance and rigidity. We work closely with a Western Australian dental laboratory to ensure that you are delivered the best possible results.
What is a bridge?
Dental bridge restoring a missing tooth
Bridges are used for replacing a missing tooth for patients who wish to avoid dental implants. They work the same way as a crown, but the healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth are filed down and used as anchors for the bridge. These generally do not last as long as a dental implant but are considered less invasive. Just like dental crowns, bridges are created in the laboratory.
In the long term, there is every chance that the teeth supporting the bridge can become prone to decay, damage or infection when there is poor dental hygiene. While these limitations can be overcome with dental implants, some dentists may feel that a bridge is an ideal option for you.
Before dental implants came into being, a bridge was the only methods of restoring missing teeth. This continues to be a common procedure still practiced by many dentists. However, with the advent of dental implants, aesthetic and structural issues caused by bridges has made implants the preferred option by most of our patients.
