‘Tis the season of presents, food comas, Christmas functions and mistletoe. If you’re lucky to find yourself under some mistletoe with a cutie, you’re probably going to spend a second worrying about your bad breath and/or whether or not your lips are chapped. It’s no secret that this hot, dry weather can leave our lips vulnerable to damage and maybe you ate too much garlic bread. But that’s okay, because this guide will show you how you can be ready for anything.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR LIPS
- Scrub them gently using either a lip scrub or a soft toothbrush to remove any excess dry skin or discolouration. To make a quick lip scrub at home, simply mix some lemon juice, honey and sugar into a paste and have at it! The only hard part is not eating the scrub afterwards.
- Now that your lips are nice and soft, it’s essential that you hydrate them. We would recommend using a healing lip balm, or Vaseline works just as well. Keeping your lips hydrated will help prevent them from cracking in this hot, dry weather.
- This one is for those makeup queens out there. Picking the right colour lipstick that cancels out yellow tones will immediately help in brightening your teeth. For a smile that shines bright like a diamond, opt for rich red or berry hues, colours with blue undertones or shiny, nude glosses. Avoid bright orange, pale pink or yellow-toned reds.
INSTANT BAD BREATH REMEDIES
- Do yourself a favour and ALWAYS carry sugar-free mint or gum in your pocket or purse. Not only is it an instant remedy for bad breath, but chewing on gum will reduce tooth decay in the long run. The increased production of saliva helps to neutralise acids made by oral bacteria, which in turn will help prevent cavities.
If you don’t have any mints available to you, it might seem like a good idea to reach for a minty candy cane. Try to avoid this, as the sugar is seriously detrimental to the health of your teeth. Instead, you should opt for fresh, strongly-scented herbs such as basil, parsley or coriander – chew on these and that should mask your bad breath for a short period of time.
- You can use a spoon to remove the yellowish coat of bacteria on your tongue. Try getting as close to the back of your tongue as you can without gagging. Just make sure you sneak off to the bathroom to do this; doing it in front of everyone at the dinner table is probably a bit of a social faux pas.
- Rinse your mouth out with plain water. It will help dislodge food that has become caught in your teeth, and as we all know, seeing a chunk of food caught in someone’s teeth is always a little awkward.
